THE STORY
Her devotion was so complete that God entered her home—and took her place.
Sakhubai’s days are filled with hardship, yet her heart remains fixed on Lord Vitthal. When the chance comes to journey to Pandharpur, worldly duties and cruelty stand between her and the deity she longs to see.
Then the impossible happens. Vitthal does not merely rescue His devotee—He assumes her form, enters her household and carries every burden she was forced to leave behind.
This beloved story of bhakti reveals a God who is not distant from suffering, but willing to become a servant for the sake of sincere devotion.
Sakhubai’s devotion grows inside a household where duty is used not as shared responsibility but as a means of control. Her longing for Pandharpur is therefore spiritual and deeply human: she wishes to stand, even briefly, in a place where her inner life is recognised rather than dismissed.
When she is prevented from joining the pilgrimage and tied to a pillar, the story reaches its starkest contrast. Her body is confined, but remembrance of Vitthal cannot be bound. Bhakti appears here not as escape from reality, but as the one part of her dignity that cruelty cannot confiscate.
Vitthal’s response reverses every hierarchy. The deity does not arrive merely as a powerful rescuer who breaks the door. He takes Sakhubai’s appearance and performs the domestic labour imposed upon her. The divine accepts anonymity, exhaustion and service so that the devotee may complete her pilgrimage.
Sakhubai’s death at Pandharpur and restoration through Rukmini Devi add another dimension to the narrative. Liberation and earthly responsibility seem to pull in different directions, yet she is returned so that truth can be revealed and the relationships at home can be transformed.
When the family discovers who had been serving in her place, ordinary work is reinterpreted. Tasks they considered Sakhubai’s insignificant obligation had been performed by Vitthal Himself. Their reform begins when they recognise divine presence in the person whose suffering they had ignored.
